History of
Vanilla

Vanilla was a sacred Indian plant. It was used as a remedy for high fever. It was also popular as an aphrodisiac. The famous vanilla elixir of love was prepared together with cocoa. Today, we use vanilla as a spice that stimulates appetite, induces a good mood and relaxation.

Vanilla originally comes from Mexico, where it was grown and processed by the Aztecs. It was used only for festive moments and medical procedures. Vanilla did not reach Europe until the beginning of the 16th century. Because vanilla orchids had to be pollinated by a special Mexican bee. In the 19th century, it was only after the discovery of the method of artificial pollination that vanilla came into the world. Among the largest growers are the French colonies of Madagascar, French Polynesia and the island of Tahiti.
